New Zealand Maori Hockey

Our History

NZ Maori Hockey (Te Haupoi Maori o Aotearoa) was formally established in 1992 with the first ever National Maori Tournament hosted by Takitimu in Napier over Labour weekend. Since then, the tournament has gone from strength to strength as Maori participation in hockey continues to grow year on year.

The aim of NZ Maori hockey is to provide Maori players with the opportunity to excel and develop their potential within our sport. The environment Maori Hockey offers our players is unique where all aspects of Maoritanga is encouraged (whanaungatanga, tikanga, te reo, te ao maori).

One of the key objectives of NZ Maori Hockey is to provide our players the widest opportunities to participate in competition at the highest level. The New Zealand Heritage Hockey Tournament provides our elite Maori players a platform showcase their talent against strong opposition.
